The super-delicious GI-tagged vintage Munsiyari Rajma is cultivated in pollution-free organic atmosphere of Munsiyari region of Uttarakhand. ‘Munsiyari’ means the abode of snow. Munsiyari is a Himalayan Tehsil and a beautiful small town of the same name nestled at the height of 2200m.
This GI-tagged off-white Munsiyari Rajma is grown traditionally in 100% organic method. The indigenous seeds sown are traditionary, i.e they are being saved after each crop for generations.
The cultivation is done on the slopes of Himalayas in terrace farming system and the whole process of cultivation is manual. The entire region is covered under snow from December to March. Towards the end of March and Beginning of April snow starts to melt. May is the month of sowing seeds and by November the crop is harvested. It takes 6-7 long months for the crop to be ready.
The pristine Himalayan soil and the pollution-free divine atmosphere make it extra nutritious for health and extra delicious to taste. It has High protein and fiber content. The ‘Munsiyari Rajma’ is not grown on large scale. The indigenous farmers have small holdings, and that too in the form of rocky mountain terrace where agriculture needs extremely hard physical work!
There are more than a dozen varieties of Rajma associated with Munsiyari region of which the large off-white variety is the most popular. In 2021, it has been granted the prestigious ‘GI-Tagged’ status! As a Geographical Indication tagged product, Munsiyari Rajma supports the livelihoods of local farmers while preserving agricultural heritage.
